Welcome to Rauris, a traditional, unspoilt ski resort in the protected Hohe Tauern National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Rauris is an ideal beginner / intermediate ski resort with lovely wide groomed pistes and no lift queues. 2 main bubble lifts (the base station just 250m from the apartment) take you up to 2200m and a variety of other chair, drag and button lifts give a total of 20 delightful tree-lined runs. The resort has two excellent ski-schools with English speaking instructors.
More advanced skiers could also consider the www.salzburgsuperskicard.com which, for just 25% more than a Rauris ski pass, gives you access to nearby ski panoramas like Bad Gastein (30 mins), Kaprun's 365 days a year glacier skiing (20 mins), Saalbach-Hinterglemm and includes Kitzbuhel (both 40 mins). Not to be missed is the dedicated 'Rodelbahn' or toboggan run under the Kreuzboden chairlift, floodlit on Monday and Thursday evenings. Fabulous fun !
The entire valley promotes itself as the Raurisertal, although Rauris remains the main centre. Downhill skiing has a long history here, Wilhelm Ritter von Arlt bringing the sport to Rauris. Together with goldmine-owner Ignanz Rojacher he brought the first skis from a study trip to Scandanavia back to Rauris, starting Austria's earliest ski-school in March 1902.
Some years ago Rauris had to decide whether to opt for mass tourism or a gentler way of life. They decided to preserve the local precious countryside, plants, animals and mountains. Species previously extinct in the area have been reintroduced - look out for the imposing bearded vultures, chamois, ibexes and once the snow melts, free-roaming marmots. The former gold-mining valley is renowned for the ski-touring options on the 2 glaciers under the 3105m high Sonnblick peak, its 32km of langlauf cross-country pistes, the 'Rauriser Urwald' 95km of hiking trails and its inclusion in the vast Pinzgau mountain biking network.
